Grand AM @ Laguna Seca (Photos)

The first event I shot this past weekend. It was a crazy one... shooting two days of Grand AM and then two days worth of AMA. Only two days to get four days worth of photos, but it was a great few days! Enjoy:

wow, F26?! no C/P / N/D filters?

I shot some bike stuff this weekend at f/45 or so (1.4xTC on the 70-200mm f/2.8). Makes the dust spots standout, but I've never really noticed a drop in quality with the high apertures. I own a ND filter, but it just makes the viewfinder dark and is a PITA to take on/off when shooting different types of shots (with various shutter speeds, etc.).

I may be naive about this, but other than being outside of the lenses potential 'sweet spot' is there a reason not to use such high apertures?

Absolutely love the frist and last 2... sweet.

I agree with the CP / ND - just makes you see through a darker viewfinder....

That but, for me, mostly not being able to drop the shutter speed enough even with the lens at its smallest aperture. The D2x goes down to ISO 100, not 50. Depth of field is of course usually less of a problem with pan shots since the panning serves to isolate the subject. As for sharpness, I've found that most fast, long lenses seem to be more optimized for the large aperture end, plus you ultimately run into diffraction limits with any lens. ND filters are also handy for limiting DOF with fill-flash in bright light, where you might run into maximum flash sync problems, but Nikon bodies and flashes now have trickery to allow sync at any speed (and I think Canon does, too).

I agree that your shots look plenty sharp, at least as far as I can tell at that size, so no reason to change anything. I find the dark viewfinder with NDs annoying, too. Nice shots. I especially like that first shot with the Porsche.

Good variety here Todd...a lot at the shorter and medium focal lengths. The corkscrew really presents some good opportunities for interesting composition like you show in #3.

Very nice Todd.

I really like #6. Good stuff.

And one thing I forgot to mention in the AMA thread: Thanks for posting your settings on these. It really gives us an idea what the Pro's are doing. Like for instance: I noticed you varied your ISO settings quite a bit throughout the images posted here. Thats something I don't really think to change much, a habit learned from starting out with film I guess. I need to consider that more,
