Yup, more Mid-Ohio. This time the SVRA held their annual Vintage Grand Prix. Not quite the car count, and/or car quality that we've had in the past, but what can you do? Still had some really cool car's regardless. I've only sorted a small portion of what I've shot: Here are a few I liked:

1. Ex- Roger Penske owned, Marc Donohue driven '67 Trans-Am Camaro. Incredibly cool car, AND the owner ran the ever-loving crap out of it.

Nothing says vintage more than a vent window. LOL - Good colors on this set, Chris. Like the mirror shot too.

Hey, Chris, I didn't know you're here. Still a bit more racing this afternoon so I'll look for you. Nice shots! I'll get some stuff up when I get back.

Yeah, no kidding. He drove the ENTIRE weekend with that darn vent window hanging open. But he was WORKING that car, so I'll forgive him. There was a guy in an old Formula car, the only guy I saw all weekend who was wearing "period correct" helmet, goggles, and nomex face mask thingy... I shot the heck out of him because it was cool to see that: until I noticed the camcorder strapped to his roll bar! Oh, well. Thanks JT.

Hey Mark,
Bummer, I would have liked to meet you! Actually, our paths probably crossed a few times without actually knowing it. Unfortunately I had to take off early today so I couldn't stay the whole day.

I was actually ready to leave early anyway after being scolded by another Photographer for handing out business cards and selling images to the competitors without paying the track vendor fee that he had to pay.

Which is funny because: a) I don't even have business cards, and b) I don't sell to the competitors... but whatever. I can kind of see where he was coming from, I would be irritated too, but the way he went about accusing people kind of irritated me.

Anyway, I'm done venting... Looking forward to seeing some of your work Mark.

Well that makes two of us with the guy with period-correct helmet. I thought that was great. The camera, which took me a while to notice, too, was less great.

Yeah, sorry I missed you. Or, like you say, more than likely saw you at some point but didn't know it was you. Hmmm, I'm guessing I know who it was who gave you a hard time but I'll PM you to confirm.

Did you try shooting from the outside of turn 11? I got thrown out of there this morning. It's marked on the map as okay and it's traditionally been a spot that we've used. The corner worker was pretty polite about it but it was a bit disappointing. I talked with a photographer who works closely with the track people and he said he'd get it resolved for the ALMS weekend.

Yeah, I shot there a good portion of the morning on Saturday, and no one said a word, heck the corner workers even waved "hello!" It's funny about shooting in various spots around there, some corner workers kick you out and some say go ahead. Terry Watson and I asked one of the corner workers if we could climb up into a rickety old announcers booth they had on the outside of 11 for a few minutes. He said " Yeah, I don't care"... On a side note: I wouldn't recommend that as a good spot. The view wasn't all that great, and if you wanted to pan... well the thing swayed back and forth with every little movement. I was a little nervous....

I actually shot from there a bit on Saturday morning, too, as did the SVRA photographer, also with no problem. Not so on Sunday. I crossed over the bridge to talk to the corner worker and he said I couldn't shoot from there because it had the yellow plastic around it which means it's an escape hole and not a photo hole. I said that traditionally hasn't been a problem and, since photographers are both sentient and mobile, we won't just stand there blocking the hole if anyone tries to crawl through. Okay, I said it more politely than that. But he wouldn't budge. And, again, he was polite (a nice change of pace after getting screamed at by rent-a-cops at Cleveland). I asked another corner worker later and he said it's now off-limits because it's a high-impact zone. The former track photographer told me he thought it was still okay and would try to get things straightened out and would also try to get a corner worker representative at the photo meeting so there wouldn't be ten different versions of "someone told me...".

That stand looks very rickety. I wondered what the view is like from up there but I'm pretty acrophobic and klutzy so I wasn't too tempted to try.

Sadly, we are all acutely aware of the need for corner workers and the thankless job/service they provide. That aside, however, I find the idea of them assuming they are in a position to create track policy on-the-fly infuriating -

Of course, my all time favorite is Road America with the silly little plastic metalflake wrist band. "Why do I need this," I ask the registration person - "oh, that's to identify you to the corner workers so they know you're a photographer," she says. ...... hmmmm... I guess this XXL vest with orange day glow stripes and PHOTO #120 isn't obvious enough. LOL

Except, some photogs need vests that only say M. Maybe the wrist bands are for us. ....errrrrr... them.

Yeah... that wrist band just might even firm up that wrist too. :)

The mirror shot is nice as is #4. #8 being my favorite. Colors are great!
