It was the thrill of my life to meet John Thawley this past weekend at the ALMS Portland Grand Prix. Wow ... finally meeting the man, the myth, the legend himself!!
Thanks also go to Jimmy Sykes and Richard Dole for making it such a warm, heartfelt time.
Here he is, wondering how to get his camera to work:

:D
Seriously though, it was good to spend a few minutes talking with the guys who make the money and looking over their shoulders for a few minutes. We had a good time trading jabs in the Photographer's Trailer before the race. And JT signed the books I bought. And Richard signed the "Sportscar" magazine with his pictures all over it.
I'll post some stuff to the "Critique" section a bit later.

cool, glad some folks are meeting others in person rather than just keeping things on-line :)

ahh.. here we go.
I think I might have seen you shooting down at the chicane during the race. I'll have to look through my photos since I took a few of the photographers while I was shooting cars there.

Yeah, most of us were in the chicane at the start of the race, and there were several who went back near the end of the race.

I have a photo of someone taking panning shtos at the tip of the corner at the end of the straight and the start of the festival curves towards the end of the race.. and a few more of people lugging around lenses and such during the race :D
I took a few more of people who happened to have 2 - 3 cameras and or lenses hanging around their neck around the paddock and on the grid before the race too :)

I did a little work on the pre-race grid... gets a little crowded though. I shot the apex of the Festival Corners on Saturday morning... during the warm up.
For the race, I shot the start down the straight after the exit of the Festival Corners in front of the corner worker's station. Pleasantly, I was alone. Not a great shot though.. the angle is tough and the heat kills any hope of sharpness.

The book signing was caught on "film" as well, though tragically it was on JTs P&S camera so they may sadly be lost forever. :D
Speaking of P&S cameras, I do believe there are some photos around somewhere with the illustrious JT shooting a P&S through a photo hole in the chicane...oh the humanity.

See ... just look at that grin! Thrill of my life indeed!!! :D Or maybe it was all the love being passed around. Or simply the fact that I was in an air conditioned space!
