Someone caught the new X5 out and about with this rig attached to it...but what the hell are they taking a photo of? ;)

Well, that's a video camera, probably with at least a semi-wide angle. I'd say they are shooting the side of the car, passenger, side scenery as part of a running shot take. You tend to aim for several different angles when shooting a video.
