1/250th will never cut it for this type of shooting. Get it down .... easily 1/125 ... but better yet around 1/60th.
Don't worry about the ones you miss... the ones you get will blow you away. That's why you have big memory cards and a delete key. Take some risks.

Most of us that shoot dirt dont shoot alot of shots under 1/160 due to people, for some reason, not liking them....the dirt crowd is alot different than the road racers I normally shot for during the year.....i do thank you for the C&C and will try the 1/125 and slower....I have a few at 1/80 and 1/60 but that is on the road courses....thanks again

I understand that, to a point. But 1/125 is still going to produce a sharp car with corner to corner focus. I can see where 1/60 would stretch the artisic boundaries of the uninitiated, but as a photographer, you need to push the envelope. If you let the client establish your portfolio you'll never grow. The customer is NOT always right. In fact, quite often they are wrong. Educate them.
Please don't take offense, but you could shoot these in the parking lot. That should keep the customer REALLY happy. ;)

Travis -
Some look a bit over sharpened to me. Are you going to the SDS race this weekend? If so maybe I'll be able to find you. I'll be one of the few with Canon equipment, wearing a Rolling Wheels Raceway hat.
John -
I get where you're coming from since I shoot the same stuff as Travis. The regional trade paper rarely if ever publishes photos that could be considered 'artistic' or really convey a sense of speed. I only have 1 race team I shoot for but 95% of the time they will select images that were shot at a higher shutter speed. I try to go lower but those images do not generate the response from teams/fans that they would on this board. Last year I got very frustrated around June because I ran out of creativity and went back to what everyone else was doing mainly because of the lack of any feedback. Maybe I'm a bad photographer due to a lack of creativity on a weekly basis. I absolutely love the 2 sportscar races I attend each year because I can shoot however I want to. At a normal weekly event I try to balance shooting how I would like vs. what I know will satisfy the client however a majority of my time is spent satisfying the client. I wonder if providing more material out of the norm to the client would work toward, as you put it, educating them.

In a word... communicate. Talk to then. Discuss the difference. Put prints side by side. Talk about the energy... the speed and relate it to their efforts. They need to understand that these images should excite the viewer... not just show the driver's mom that he brushed his teeth that day. ;) It's up to us to educate the customer and raise the bar.. if not us, then who?

Hi Brent and Travis I know exactly what you are saying as I have the same problem at Knoxville, After being exposed to different types of auto photography I've made an effort to change the way I"ve been shooting for the late 30 some years and I'll have to say that I'm having more fun now than ever before....I still shoot the money shots like normal but I"m gradually slowing the shutter down and am now selling those... I do a lot of stuff for the Nationals program and the art editor and I have had talks about changing the look of the shots...I printed images for the 2008 program that were both static and well as artsy.... I also made two prints of some shots cropping the way they like and they the way I wanted... I was amazed with the positive response I got,, I can hardly wait for the season to get started as I have more things I would like to try....Dave

I get the same repsonse when shooting motocross. I make an occassional sale for an artistic piece (ie: slow shutter speeds, etc.), but the racers and parents all love the frozen images. Dirt clods flying and crazy lean angles. I love to stretch it out, try new angles, slow shutter speeds etc, but after spending 5 hours shooting in the dust and 100+ temps, its hard not get bread and butter on the card.
Love the shots, might be cliche'd and in every dirt oval mag and even the SSNews, but that is what they want. Gotta love BB mudbus action!
