Just some throwaways from the noon qualifying of Super Taikyu (Endurance) racing at the Fuji Speedway round. I was only there to shoot one car, so everything else was simply for practice. It has firmed up my view that unless you have to, don't shoot at noon on a cloudless, sunny day.

Super Taikyu racing is as close to a Japanese stock car racing series as you will get, as they actually use the standard bodies (with appropriate roll cages), somewhat standard engines, off-the-shelf suspension components and such. A pretty wide range of vehicles compete, not necessarily just Japanese cars. Interestingly, Autobacs has chosen to run a Porsche this year.

Not too shabby for bottom-of-the-bin throwaways! :) I like the tripod'ing Subbie and both 350Z shots!

please stop posting pics, paul.

my laundry is soiled every time you do! j/k

the 4th shot is my fave. very unconventional from what you normally see. out of curiosity, how many frames did you shoot from that similar angle before you got this keeper?

Hmmm, not overly much, probably about 20 or so. I only had a half hour window to shoot in, as that was as long of a session they had (qualifying). I was actually concentrating on the Endless cars, which is what I was being paid to be there for, so I was mainly using these to make sure I had framing correct while waiting for them to come around the track.
To further explain, this was at Fuji Speedway, which I've a year-round photographers pass to, so I know the circuit (and that corner) fairly well. :)

Every time I see a thread of yours I get excited. This is yet another outstanding set. I love that EVO. Any backstory on that?

That Evo wagon is actually something I had shot previously for Modified. It was the Tokyo Auto Salon show car this year for Mitsubishi Motors, and at that time, the MMC people that built it were hoping to have it actually race as well. After all they did get it into this Super Taikyu series next to it's sister car, an Evo sedan in the same color scheme.

If you had used a polarizing lens would that have helped?

I'll use polarizers, but not in racing anymore. Race cars often use plexiglas windows which polarizers do not deal well with - you get rainbow effects all over them most of the time. Polarizers also will up the contrast a bit, which may not be good on such a high-contrast day.

They do work great for normal cars and tracking shots, though. ;)
