Well, I guess I have the humbling displeasure of following Chris Clark's excellent post of his Mid-Ohio images.

So, here's my excuse... err... I mean, disclaimer:

I've been contracted by Mid-Ohio to shoot all of their major events for 2008. This puts a different spin on how I approach the weekend's events. Since most of the images are for promotional purposes such as track brochures and collateral, I need to put my personal wants aside and make sure I got the types of shots the track and their graphic designer need. So, the on-track work is to make sure we get a lot of looks... especially of any Acuras or Hondas (track sponsor) and capture the feel of the track. I also need to get paddock w/ crowds, infield activities, podium and people, signage and backgrounds. Since a lot of the "crowd" stuff is only going to be available during the ALMS/IRL weekend, I'll use the IRL day to gather a lot of the facility and crowd shots.

What I am looking forward to is this week's vintage Grand Prix... I want to see if I can't replicate a vintage feel to a set of images... and I'm looking forward to the bikes later this summer.

An additional bonus is hanging out with Chris Clark.... we've had a lot of fun trying to ferret out new looks of Mid-Ohio pointing our 500mm every which way we can think of. LOL

So, here are a few humble offerings:

#1 is full of epic. Awesome.

#2 is my new favorite "morning" location... thanks for pointing it out.

And, well #8 is mighty nice too. Where was I when you were shooting the ladies?

See you this weekend!

Congratulations on the OP position at MO John...

I'm pleased that you're the one taking over the reigns there....I simply had to say no and decline working at MO because I just didn't have time and so many of my races clashed with events at MO, such as ALMS, and so I couldn't give them the coverage they wanted. Although I'll be there for the Superbike races of course so I guess we'll see you soon. Fingers crossed that it doesn't rain for the Superbike races though...as there will most likely not be any racing, or at least any of the big names racing in the rain there.

If you haven't been to the Vintage bike races then be prepared for a small city to spring up overnight. I have never seen so many people with so much, well stuff...

Good luck...oh, and #1 is a nice picture too.

Congrats on the postion with the track JT.
I have already mentioned #1, very nice, This set being different #7 has a great prespective in my opinion, but I think #8 steal the post LOL.

Thanks, Andrew. Funny, Regis claims I stole it from him. LOL I'm pleased they were finally given the proper budget to meet my rates. I had intentionally pulled back my 2008 schedule primarily to ALMS to spend more time at home... but this really worked out. I've always enjoyed the track and it seems there is always something new popping up. I'm looking forward to shooting a little variety too.

John:

Having been to Mid-Ohio once, and not knowing my way around (much less my ass from a hole in the ground), can you tell me the locations on your shots (especially #8)?

Chris:

Chris Clark wrote a great primer on Mid-Ohio in his Blog on The Race Forums (http://www.theraceforums.com/forums/blogs/chris-clark/79-mid-ohio-photography-guide.html).

Nice stuff as always John and congratulations on the OP gig. I like 'em all, but standouts for me would be 1, 4 & 7.

Excellent pics, John. But your disclaimer puzzles me. I would hope that nobody would look down upon your images because you delivered what your client wants. That is what business is all about, right? :)

Typically, I would post things here that I'd consider a bit "edgier." This weekend didn't really afford me the time or opportunity to shoot like that, since I needed to get a little bit of everything. As mentioned in another post, I've intentionally reduced my schedule this year focusing mainly on ALMS so I can take the time and enjoy shooting what I like most... and having the opportunity to experiment.

I didn't mean I was apologizing for the work. Thank you, none-the-less. :)

#1 is one of the best shots I've seen lately. Lovin' it.

Regis eh? Too funny. I don't think anyone stole it from anyone. It is a good track and I always have a good time there and the people are always really super nice but with so many motorcycle events that I cover, and with the event clashes - for example the ALMS weekend clashes with MotoGP - I told Becky I couldn't in all honesty cover what they wanted covered, which was a shame, hence why when asked to cover the track events again for 2008 I had to decline. Just not that many hours in a day.

I'm sending you a PM...

Andrew :)
