Fog so thick I couldn't autofocus, so dark that at 1/60th I was shooting wide open with a 50mm. Six hundred accredited media. What an incredible, frustrating, moving experience.

These are not necessarily representive of either the day or what I shot (much of what I did was "safe"). Instead, it's a newbie's impressions and maybe a glimpse of the challenges faced. I do welcome C&C, but I'm not sure if this group is the right one for that. Mostly, I felt privileged to be there, especially as I spent most of the rest of the time at the auctions.

I apologize for the obligatory Leno shot. Also that I cut off the edge of the wheel. But that car is like 35 feet long.

what ISO did you shoot it at?

I started at 200 and worked down from there. That Leno shot's not quite wide open, but it is 2.8 at ISO160, 1/60th.

I did start out at ISO 200, 1/60th at f1.4 or 1.7.

#8, though, was close to 10 am, and is ISO 100, 1/1500 at f4.0.

Pebble can be pretty gloomy, can you save them in PS?

"ISO 100, 1/1500 at f4.0" huh?

That one is piquing my curiosity too. :)

We must have been shooting side by side!

Ha! That's great. I was the only guy wearing a big-brimmed black hat--I couldn't figure out how to pack my Panama without crushing it.

John, what's piquing you about #8?

Just curious about the choice of f/4 - kind of shallow depth of field (I don't see any selective focus)... and it's underexposed... even beyond the fact of it being back lit. Just not sure that would have been my choice... from a composition aspect. But.... choice it is. :)

My goals were to:
-Blow out the background somewhat
-Stay sharp enough to have foreground detail
-Show the repeating hood lines in an interesting way

Possibly I failed at some or all of my goals. I hoped the underexposure would make the wall of bodies and hills dark enough to serve as a background to the bright hoods. Plus I have a tendency to underexpose in general.

I don't have much experience shooting in crowded situations like that; most of my work is more set pieces. Looking at it, my biggest gripe is now the framing, especially of the foremost red car.

Bring it on--what else ya got?

That clears it up for me. Been there... done that.. probably several times... probably go there again sometime in the near future. It's what we do. LOL
