Seems like Canon China leaked some info about the upcoming releases...

http://www.canon.com.cn/front/canon/news/backend_news_detail.jsp?id=2322

Looks pretty legit

Canon 400D, EF 50 f/1.2L, EF 70-200 f/4L IS

What's weird is....the 400D is said to have a 10.1mp...so where does this leave the just released 30D?

Anyways...just wanted to share :)

I wouldn't mind the 50 1.2, if infact it's weather sealed as someone translated. I don't see why none of prime L lenses in the wide to shor telephoto range don't have this, but yet alot of the L zooms do.

If it's on par with the 85 or the 135, I'll give it a look. (hopefully it will be smaller than the 85!) I would really like to have a weather sealed lens, but I don't want a zoom.

I have never been a fan of the Canon EF 50mm lenses. I was never impressed with their build quality, or wide aperture performances. Come on, 50mm is a standard lens, make a good solid one! I'm stuck using a Zeiss because I like the build quality!

If this follows their model numbering convention, I'm guessing this camera is a 10mp Rebel.

Consumers go ga-gah over megapixels, pros, to a certain extent, do not. If you recall, the D60 had 6 megapixels amd was on the market at the same time as the 3.2 megapixel 1D and long before the 1D MkII came along at 8 mega pixel.

So... if it's a Rebel, it's simply a marketing effort aimed at the consumer camera segment.

i don't need more megapixels, personally. 8 is plenty for me.

I agree 100%

where does this leave the just released 30D?
I would guess there are some functionality limitations (ISO3200 is one) with the 400D that keep the 30D higher in the pile. As John said, there are many things other than MP.

What I find interesting about the release is the:

EOS integrated dust removal system following three measures : Since cleaning sensors modules (Self Cleaning Sensor Unit), removal functions (Dust Delete function) and manual cleaning sensors.

Where it leaves the 30D is in the Pro-sumer category. The Rebel line is a consumer SLR. Things like build quality, materials and componentry are of a lesser grade.

I would think that IF Canon does release this camera, then it is very likely (maybe 80% chance) that they will drop a 10MP 30D replacement at the same time, using the same new sensor. Then Canon can leave any update on the Mark bodies until PMA.

Why do I think this, and is it pure speculation..?? Well, consider this:

- The 18 month product life cycle is over for the Rebel XT, and it is due for a refresh
- The feature upgrade on the 30D was extremely minimal, and it's entirely possible that the 30D was originally supposed to have a 10MP sensor, but it wasn't ready in time for the refresh from the 20D
- So now that Canon has worked out 10MP CMOS production then both cameras could get a bump with pretty minor upgrades to the 30D
- A CMOS upgrade to the 30D at the same time as the XT replacement would help unit cost on the new sensors due to the increased volume
- Maintaining an 8MP 30D with a 10MP Rebel in the MP sensitive consumer/pro-sumer market would cannibalize sales from within toward a lower margin consumer camera
- The introduction of the 10MP D80 also puts external pressure on the 30D's sales

So, what I personally would expect at Photokina, particularly in the face of recent stiffer competition at the low end from Nikon is five things:

1. Intro of a new Digital Rebel (XTi?)
2. Rebel XT remains in the line at a lower price as a starter camera until 8MP CMOS supply is depleted
3. Upgrade to the CMOS on the 30D, with very little upgrade to the rest of the camera
4. 20D and 30D are discontinued
5. Price drop on the 5D

This has the advantage of stimulating sales on Canon's low end and delaying introduction of new Marks until PMA. This will give Canon 6 more months of development in the new higher resolution sensors and possibly work out some potential pricing kinks of a unified Mark body, if that is the future strategy.

I'm also anticipating Canon will quietly discontinue at least two of the five remaining film bodies, the 3 and the K2 seem likely to go.

If I'm right do I get an e-cookie?

Yep. I use my 20D for about 90% of my pix. 8Mpixels is just fine for a double page spread. The 1dsmk2 usually gets used becaus of better focusing accuracy or for use with wide angle lenses just as often as because of the larger file it produces.

I tell you what, I should have invested in canon a few years before the digital boom hit, they have got to be making a killing with all these cameras they have out now! I wonder in a few years, what 'new features' are going to be added/upgraded?
