Has anyone had any experience with the Canon 30D and if so, what do you think about it? I'm hoping to buy one soon.

It is basically the same as the 20D, with a bigger LCD, and a spot meter. I use both the 20 and 30. The 30 seems slightly faster to write to the CF card. And the AF seems to be slightly better. No side by side tests to prove it though.

My roommate picked one up when his 10D died. I haven't shot with it yet, but he loves it so far.

It depends on what you're shooting with now, and what you are looking to get out of your camera. i picked up my 20D for cheap right when the 30D came out, and i'm very happy with it. If i had to buy a camera now though, i'd go 30D. I am not a 5D kind of guy, but for some people, a 5D is a better option.

I'll be buying a 30D next month to semi-replace my 10D (which will go to second camera duty). The improvement in continuous shooting, screen, 1/3 ISO's, and a couple of other changes make it better for me I think.

The 20D/30D is a great camera, to be honest. I've relegated mine to second body duty most of the time, with the main being a 1D mII, but there are occasions where I drag it out instead. The 20/30D just seems to handle jpg better, for instance. Easier to operate as well. Image quality is so close that the 1d MII doesn't really start pulling ahead till you move to raw, and then it is still really close.

Cheers

My gut tells me there will be a new 1.6 crop body this fall from Canon. In the past week, prices are down again to 1249 at reputable retailers.

When I started watching this body 6 weeks ago, it was 1325 at Adorama and 1350 everywhere else.

Curious what makes you say that?

I'd see that more than a 30D upgrade, then again... a 200D killer would be in order (I just think going to 10.2MP would cut into the 5D sales, minus the FF stuff).

I work at a canon dealer, so we usually get letters about new cameras coming out in the near future. We haven't gotten anything about that yet.

Thanks for your opinions guys.:)

I picked up a 30D to replace my 10D for the increased buffer for the drifting shows we shoot.

digicII is nice along with the 5 fps for capturing the right moment.

I absolutely love my 30D. I just wish the AI servo worked a little faster like the 1d series.

Does anyone have experience with the 20D vs. 30D as far as battery life goes? Is the battery life of the 30D similar to that of the 20D? I'm convinced that the smaller screen cameras are better since the smaller the screen the less battery power it uses to preview the image, thus there's more power to keep shooting, but I really have nothing to base my theory on other than the fact that screens are the #1 power user on laptops, thus the smaller screen laptops seem to have longer battery life.

According to Canon's Web site, the 30D can shoot 1100 images vs. 650 on the 20D with the same battery (BP-511A). I thought they used different batteries. I don't see how the 30D can shoot so many more more images with the same battery. Am I reading this wrong?

I've taken over 1200 shots on one charge on my 30. none with flash. the battery life is amazing.

i'm not a fan of the size of the xt series. I'd pay more to have comfortable hands.

I ended up buying a 30D about a month ago. (At the same time I bought a 300/2.8L IS and a 1.4x TC to replace my 100-400L and relegated the 10D to second body status...usually with a Sigma 70-200/2.8).

I can say the focusing on the 30D with the 300/2.8 is definitely faster and equally precise or better (I always thought my 10D focused really precisely).

I'll write some reviews of all it once I get more time behind the camera. I'm shooting High school football locally this fall and the combination will serve me well.
