I was able to attend the Monterey Pre Historic race. Wish I could have stayed for the Historics this weekend. Had a lot of fun shooting cars and wrenching on one too. Comments welcome. Cheers Jim

GORGEOUS Set, Jim!
#1- Love the color and composition-- I wish it were a tad sharper though.
#2- nice shot as well. Those old cars look like they are flying!
#4- The trumpets are awesome. Is it desaturated a bit though? I bet a bit higher black point and a more vivid yellow would look killer.
#8- FTW. Man this could be blown up and put in Audi showrooms! NICE!

Thanks for the comments Perry.
I took a closer look at 1, it gets a bit sharper when looking at it full size but unfortunately it never gets tack sharp. I sharpened the original a bit more which helped, but it not perfect.
Looking at 4 again, your right it is a little flat. I treaked it, I think it looks better now. But I am debating if it needs a little more.

agreed! maybe a tad much on the tinting though.
Most of the other track shots look a bit out of focus?

Thanks for all the comments. A friend of mine let me use all his camera equipment for the weekend. I had a ball with it, the only problem is now I want to upgrade my camera equipment more than ever. I got to check out a 1DMkIII, a 1DsMkII, a 70-200 F2.8 L IS, and a 400 F2.8. Awsome stuff. It was a big upgrade over the XT I have.
I looked at all the track shots again. I little more sharpening helped the 1st, 3rd and last one. These were all shot with the 400 on a monopod. Personally it seems like they should be sharper than they are. Most of the time I had the IS on sometimes on mode 1 sometimes on mode 2. Would that make them a little soft since I was using a monopod or do I just need to practice more? The second one looks sharp to me, it was shot with a 70-200 with IS on and no monopod. Unfortuneately its sharpest at the drivers seat and the more I look at it the more I find I look at the front of the car, not the driver. In the furture it seems like it would work better to have the front of the car sharp for shots like this one.
Thanks again
Jim

I pretty much never use IS when shooting motorsports. If anything mode 1 will work against you and mode 2 can only be helpful if you are doing a long slow pan although I still almost never use it even for that. If you feel like the AF isn't working for you, you can always choose a point on the track where the car is in the perfect position for the shot and prefocus there. Leave it on MF and trigger the shutter just before you see the car get there.
Overall great work though!
