Finally, racing season is back. Spent my summer shooting football and baseball and the itch to shoot some motorsports was getting pretty fierce.
So what do I start my busiest time of the year with? ,,, Some abstract work.
I'm not sure a critique really applies to these images since I purposely broke as many 'normal shooting' rules as possible. It's more of a "Does this work?" type question I am asking.

I like the first and last the best. The third is ok also but I think lacks the punch of the other two. The third and fourth, I don't think work...for me they are too difficult to tell what they are. I know that you can't always tell what an abstract picture is, but the distortion of these two don't feel right to me.
The first and last (especially the last) are really nice though.

wow the last one is great. i would also like the 2nd one more if there was more contrast, so there was less grey and the blue stuck out more.

IMO, you need some part of the subject to be sharp(ish) for the eye to lock on... #1 and #5 do that perfectly. #2 is interesting, I like the blur of the truck, but wish there was something else (like the lights) to give the background more motion. #3 is a bit too much... but, if there was a bit more car (less motion) the "twisting" effect is quite cool. #4 has a great background, but the car is just a bit too soft.
Did you shoot any with a little pop of fill flash? With a little fill, you can create a "ghost" image of the car... can add a little sharpness to the subject (but too much flash is a bad thing).

All the effects were produced in camera. About the biggest Photoshop was some burning on one or two of the photos.
As soon as I started playing with the exposure, I wished that I had brought my flash with me. Some of the techniques that I was playing with really could have benefited from it. The second picture was my attempt to recreate the style of using a flash. I would pan with the truck for half the time that the shutter was open then jerk the camera ahead making the trail effect.
All in all, it was fun. It really got me thinking about different ways of doing long exposures. It's definitely something that I will continue to play with.

I really like the second image. The last image is also really good, and approaching "conventionalism" rather than "abstract" :)
