View Full Version : So...What do you drive?

Since we all like shooting cars, what kind of car do you drive? (in pictures plz)

From today, I finally washed the filthy pig:

http://www.jw-photo.com/events/pictures/jw_MG_3361_HDR.jpg

Ugly location though, sorry about that. I was too tired from all the scrubbin to put a lot of effort into getting a good shot.

Its funny how so many automotive photographers I run into are Volkswagen/Audi owners. I have an '05.5 A4 2.0T Quattro with various mods :) It's also the Fourtitude project B7, so make sure you check out the build-up. I've got some great stuff coming up in future installments :)

My only car now is a 2006 Mustang GT. only modifications are intake, exhaust, 4.10 rear gears and a tune. Thats as much as I'll be putting into this car. It's pretty much my weekend pleasure car because I walk to work. I drive around the malibu mountains when I have the weekends off. It's paid for, so I don't mind not using it during the week, In fact I'm glad I don't have to drive to work, traffic in LA is horrible! the mountains in Malibu are a blast though!

http://www.danielbuck.net/wip/my_gt.jpg

my car before that was an 86 camaro IROC with a cammed and carbed 350 truck motor. It again wasn't used much as a daily driver, so I was able to have alot of fun tearing it apart :-)

oh man, I love the mid 90's GM full size trucks! I had a red 97 vortec GMC a while back, I REALLY miss that truck :-( Probably GM's finest truck ever made, in my opinion. Them Vortec engines just don't quit! Thanks for the gallery link!

98 Toyota Camry....looks like every other one out there. I sold the fun car last year for more funds for photo gear (03 WRX Wagon).

The Toyota runs well, gets about 30 to the gallon on cheap gas, and is paid off. All of the above help when your commute is 35 miles each way.

Do you drive to most of your events then? What's your limit on driving distance?

Jim Sykes
07-11-2006, 01:53 PM
I'll drive to any event I can get to in about 12 hours or less. Initially it was due to a dislike of flying, however, I do that enough now that I dont really mind the actual flight so much any longer, but now its due to hating the whole act of flying. By the time you drive to the airport, check in, go through security and let them rifle through my camera gear, fly, get your luggage, get yoru rental car and get to your destination, a trip to Atlanta for me out of DC might be 7 hours total when flying and I can drive there in about 9.

When I drive I can have all my own stuff in my own car, I dont need to worry about packing all the stuff for flight, I dont have to lug a 45lb camera bag through an airport, I dont have to worry about my stuff making it to the destination, I can bring extra stuff that I might not pack for a flight, I have my own car, I dont have to spend the money for a rental and all kinds of other benefits to not flying.

So for me its just easier and more convenient to drive if possible. So I will go about 12 horus or so depending on things. Plus, any money I can save is also a benefit and with flights going up in price lately and rental cars costing on top of that, its still quite a bit cheaper to drive.

So out of the DC area, I'll drive to Sebring (more like 14 hours), St. Pete, Daytona, Rd. Atlanta, Lime Rock, Mosport, Watkins Glen, Barber, VIR, Cleveland (when I go), Mid Ohio, and even Rd. America. Sebring and Rd. America are on the verge, both are about 14 hours and I've done Rd. America in the past while visiting friends in Chicago and making it a double duty trip, but this year I may be flying and Sebring depends on what I can get for a price on flights, last year I flew to Sebring testing and the Rolex, but drove for the Mobil 1 12 Hours.

I dont really mind the driving, so if I can do it reasonbly within a day, I'll just drive for the money savings and the simplicity factor, but fly for anything else. I have the second car though so I dont have to worry about the fun car, roads are horrible these days and I've already damaged one rim on the R32 due to potholes, so dont like to subject it to that abuse, also I dont want to put huge miles on that car. I've had the BMW since March (Sebring was its first trip) and since then I have put over 10,000 miles on it. So I dont really want to put that kind of mileage on the R.

My money pit, and it has been a total money pit...has been my Mitsu 3000GT VR-4...don't get ne wrong, I love it, its fast, great grip, it just has sucked me dry...I am currently working on selling it and buying something a little more simple,,,I am thinking about a BMW 2002, 320i, or e30 325i...My first car was a '74 2002 and I loved it, think i would like another one(much better on gas as well over 25mpg, compared to my vr4's 14mpg)

No pictures of 'em readily available, but I may come back to this thread with some of the more photogenic ones later...

The current Veglia fleet includes:

my crusty looking late 1980s Specialized Stumpjumper, the daily commuter bicycle to my "day job"

For fun, a lovely Diamond Silver 1983 Audi Ur-Quattro with ~90k miles, aka the almost never driven fun car

For the family, a Pearl White 1995 Audi A6 quattro "avant" (aka "the mommiewagon"), now the highest miles in the fleet at ~171k

For general beating on (and maybe someday letting the teenage kids drive if they are lucky), a not so pretty Zermatt Silver 1986 Audi 4000 quattro that is a joy to drive and only has ~161k miles

And for my wife's biz, and family trucking requirements, a Tropical Blue 1995 Toyota T100 extra cab pick-em-up truck with ~138k miles

Note that the only car above with less than 100k miles is the 23 year old semi-collectable fun toy (which should be parlayed into camera gear if I had half a brain).

Pretty sad that I have virtually no pics of my car, but I seem to take pictures of everyone else's. I'll add that to my things to do list. :)

If I do all highway it's 29, but the catalytic converter is clogged right now, so I think it's robbing me of some economy. It also has 245k miles. :p

This is my 1993 240SX. I finally got finished with the engine and brought it home from the body shop last night. Here are a couple of snaps I took this morning before work. The reason for the rear view is because she looks like a 4x4 right now and I am too embarassed to post a 3/4 shot. Coil overs are on the agenda for the weekend. I hope to do some shooting this weekend and post for some C&C

My daily driver is a 2007 BMW 335i sedan. I traded in my 2006 330i sedan last week. THe new 335i has twin turbochargers. I just sold my 2001 911 coupe with a full carbon interior. It was not getting driven. My collector car in the garage is a 1965 Shelby Cobra 289 Roadster with an automatic transmission. This Roadster was driven at Shelby-American by Carroll (and others I believe) the first three years and in 1968 went to a dealership in Portland, Oregon for its first sale.

PS: THe Cobra is silver with red leather. The BMW is titanium silver with black leather.

How are you liking the 335i? For the first time in a few years I'm actually excited about a BMW again. This car has been on my 'short list' and I've read nothing but great stuff about it. Basically, the only thing I've heard 'negative' about it is that the 330i interior was better (but that's always subjective of course). Any photos?
