ok well i THOUGHT i had it nailed down but im still having some trouble when shooting raw and using DPP.
when i edit in DPP and then convert and save...ill open the JPEG in photoshop and itll be really overexposed and nasty. the color profile is set to monitor color (DELL FPW whatever) when i convert it to sRGB it looks the same amount of nasty and overexposed, but with a yellow tint, like the pure white is set to a yellowish tone.
HELP!
i tried to use matt chow's calibrator but it didnt work and kept freezing halfway through.
is this a result of that? should i get a calibrator and do it over, confuseddd.

Start by getting a good monitor calibration system like the Spyder 2 or a Gretag Macbeth system.
Then when you export from DPP, you choose what colorspace you want to export in, I havent used DPP in a long time, but its either an option while working on the photo or upon export. But essentially, you tell it what color space to put the photo in.
Then in Photoshop, you set up a working color space, most set to AdobeRGB because its a pretty large gamut. You also want to set your prefs to warn you when color spaces dont match and give you the option to work in the space of the image being imported, to convert the image to working space or to ignor altogether. This way you know if there is a mismatch.
If you match up the exported image to the working space, it should look ok. However, if the image is one color space and you are working in another and dont get warned, then they colros can be all off.
But start with making sure you get the monitor calibrated and then make sure you are matching up color spaces and you should be ok.

the photo was taken in sRGB from the camera.
from DPP i converted and saved one random photo. i saved 2 different ones one with the embed ICC profile option checked and one not selected.
both opened in CS2 very yellow.
when i go to edit > assign profile the only option that looks correct is the Dell monitor color profile.
weird.

ok so if i am looking into picking up a calibrator... i would really like not spending 300 bux. i dont do much printing so i dont need anything with crazy printing options. i do have a simple dual LCD setup though 20" dell
s and would like a calibrator that would calibrate both. i almost looked into that Huey. its only like 68bux and has great reviews. nothing fancy but gets the job done. i think i read that it will only calibrate one monitor though. hmm. suggestions?

Get the basic Spyder 2 system, it will do what you want and cost less than $200.
When you saved in DPP what color space did you save in?
When you opened in Photoshop, did the profile match? What is your working color space? Did the program ask you if there was a mismatched profile?
If you want to change a color space you need to use the "convert" not assign. You only assign if you know the color space of the photo and it doesnt have an embedded profile so that programs know what it is.
Also, you arent going to assign a monitor profile, you are going to assign a color space.

thanks jim, im finding the Spyder 2 suite for $149.99 on several sites. is that not the basic, if not can someone link me to that and maybe tell me the difference?
also i want to make sure this will calibrate both of my LCD's (im seeing a few of the reviews for the different calibrators say that they only did one)
thanks,

Its got to be something in your settings.
Your colorspace is setup the same in both programs? It shouldnt be 'monitor profile' it should be something like AdobeRGB or sRGB.
Have you tried a different RAW processor to see if it works better?

Honestly, this sounds like something outside of a color profile issue. This sounds more like an issue with the way you're processing the RAW files or something. I've never heard of a color profile swap "blowing out" a photo.
