There doesn’t seem to be a place to post this in this forum (if there is, please move this post), and I hope I’m not breaking any rules by doing this, but I thought there’s one way to find out: just post it.
Job opening: Associate Editor (entry level, full time)
Publication: SportsCar magazine
Location: Irvine, Calif.
I am hiring a full time Associate Editor to work on SportsCar magazine, the official publication of the SCCA. For a little more information on the magazine check out www.sportscarmag.com -- and I do mean a little information. SportsCar is a monthly publication, roughly 100-150 pages, color, and perfect bound. All 55,000-60,000 SCCA members receive the magazine. The content of the magazine ranges from Solo to Club Racing to RoadRally and RallyCross. Basically, if SCCA has a hand in it, we cover it. That includes, to a point, World Challenge and Formula D -- but we mainly cover motorsports on the grassroots level. The closest thing to competition for SportsCar is Grassroots Motorsports, but we aren’t really competitors since SportsCar is a club magazine, and GRM relies on subscriber and newsstand sales.
The position is an entry level one (with entry level pay), and it would be assisting me in the production of the magazine. Duties would include writing stories, dealing with freelancers, traveling to some (not many) races, and attending a handful of conventions each year (SEMA is one of them). Photography talent is not a necessity, but it sure would make my life easier. Writing talent, however, is a necessity. If you can’t string together a cohesive sentence, please don’t apply. I’m willing to teach many things to the person I hire, but grammar is not one of them.
The office is in the Irvine, Calif., 405/5/55 triangle, so only apply if you’re willing to make the drive. Also, if you’re not willing to work from 9am to 6pm on weekdays and work some weekends, then don’t apply, either.
And don’t be fooled, working on a magazine is a lot of long hours and hard work, but it is rewarding and sometimes very, very fun.
To be considered for the position, send your resume and cover letter to me at:
proyle@haymarketworldwide.com.
I’d prefer to receive PDF documents so there are no formatting errors, but I’ll also take Word files, too. And please don’t e-mail me asking how much the position pays. It’s entry level. If you’re fresh out of school and looking for work in publishing, this would be a good first job.
Feel free to pass on this information to friends you think may be interested.
