View Full Version : What else do you shoot....?

I was looking for an old image earlier and came across some images I did when I would participate in Fred Miranda's weekly assignments. What I liked about the assignments most, was it forced you to go out and shooot something specific. Something I don't do enough of now.

If you aren't aware, Fred's assignment "rules" require you shoot to a theme and you must shoot the image durig the wek of the assignment. No pulling from your portfolioi. It's a fantastic excersie and always taught me a lot... wiin lose or draw.

Anyway... I though this might be fun to share "other" images away from the automotive niche.

One of my favorites. The theme was "White on White." I called this one FRUSTRATION -

http://www.fredmiranda.com/hosting-data//3874/18921frustration.jpg

This the assingment was "Patterns in Nature." I saw this in my living room.

http://www.fredmiranda.com/hosting-data//3874/18921IMG_8990_copy.jpg

Here the theme was Reflected Self-Portrait - this was a great learning experience.

This assignment was themed "Your Job." :)

I've never been a big participant in assignments (even when I took a basic photo class I just went and shot motorcycles and cars instead). I've done some portrait work, very little, but that can be fun. I'd have to say that the other stuff that I kinda shoot seriously would be wildlife. I'm not REALLY serious about it, but I will go out with the idea of shooting it, so I guess that counts. Most things are done in my yard.

Here are a few pics of some non-automotive related stuff I've shot.

One of my favorites for the Pentax Challenge theme of Black and White (which actually won)
http://k43.pbase.com/v3/17/538217/1/47370702.dicebw.jpg

Another shot from a Pentax Challenge with the theme of "fear". I'm sure you can recognize the gist of this one.
This was actually painted with a flash light for three seconds in total darkness.
http://mishami.image.pbase.com/v3/17/538217/1/47370794.fearimage.jpg

My favorite fireworks shot.
http://mishuna.image.pbase.com/v3/17/538217/1/45774560.IMGP2205.jpg

I always seem to take a lot of pictures of the blossoms on my fruit trees.
http://i.pbase.com/o4/17/538217/1/55617484.lemonblossom.jpg

Did a few knife covers a while back.
http://mishuna.image.pbase.com/u26/bmc1/upload/43571140.Cover_KI_805.jpg

Been taking quite a few pics of some friends Arabians lately. They say there is some good money in it around here so I might have to hone my pony photo skills and give it a go.
http://i.pbase.com/o2/17/538217/1/52056408.IMGP3622.JPG

I take A LOT of photos of these. They are my Birmingham Roller pigeons which roll in somersaults at about 10 revs per second. Very challenging to try and capture.
http://mk29.image.pbase.com/o4/17/538217/1/53497418.roll9.jpg

My other hobby is I raise show pigeons and have created a little niche for quality photos of show winners.

for me, it's landscapes. Ever since I moved here to California, I can't stop taking in all of the beautiful landscapes out here! You don't have to drive very far to see some good sunsets!

Every time I have a I have weekend off from work, I head north to Malibu and take the inland roads up into the moutains. There are so many great places up there, it would take me a looong time to get tired of Malibu! I usually spend the entire late afternoon through sunset at each location, it's great to just get away from people and the city and just sit down to watch the sunset. I have a few favorite spots that I come back to, but usually I try to find a new location every weekend.

Some great shots in your post John. I might have to start reading the assignments and working on them since my shooting lately has been confined.

I shoot anything I get the chance to. In addition to motorsports, I've had the chance to get paid to shoot Ice Hockey and Soccer. I'm trying to shoot more kids' team sports locally.

And I photograph my kids quite regularly.

Hey, thanks for the phone call Tiny. I took a look at these per your request. Landscapes tend to escape me a bit and I've promised myself that one day I'll jump into it. I hear you have to get up early in the morning for some of the killer light though. :)

What strikes me about the first shot is "too much sky, not enought land." But not knowing your circumstances, I'm not sure what I would have done differently.

Same goes for the second one... I'm guessing if I were commited to getting this shot, I'd probably trek on down and shoot upward to put emphasis on the height of the formations. But, if I were stuck standing right where you were, I'm guessing I'd walk away with something similar.

Each of the last three is very cool. I might have looked for something that would give the viewer a sense of scale, though. Other than the middle shot, I have a hard time knowing if these are close-ups or how big the rock paintings are.

Nice stuff though and looks like a great place to spend some time.

Hope the location change is working out for you.

Hey! I got a call from Tiny too, I can feel the love!

I have to disagree with JT on #1, I like the little sliver of land. The shot is about the sky and the turmoil in it. I like how the light is just highlighting the bottom right corner of the rock. Great shot IMO

Number two is too flat and muddy, there is no dimension to it, needed more directional lighting

#3 & 5 do not do much for me, but the colors are nice. I agree with JT that it is difficult to get a sense of scale

#4 I like a lot but would have perhaps moved the camera a bit to the right so the cliff dwellings are a bit more off center

Hey thanks JT and Morgan for your input! I so wish the image of Spider Rock was better (I agree with the assessment). It was a rainy drab day in a beautiful place...not sure if there is anything I can do in post to save that image or not. Thoughts?

As for #1, Morgan, you are correct in what I was trying to depict with the sky. Maybe a bit more of the Cliff next time?

As for #'s 3 & 5 (the petroglyphs), they, for the most part are no larger than your hand. But my capture does nothing to tell you that huh?

AS for the cliff dwelling, I totally screwed that one due to rule of 1/3rd's violation. That is a crop so I will see if I can do something better. That is a beautiful sheer 700 foot Cliff. Wouldn't mind living there myself!

I so appreciate you two taking your time to give me some learning!

You mean there is other stuff to take photos of BESIDES cars? Wow, I never knew. :)

I did a wedding last weekend (still thinking of is I want to delve into that as a primary market). I do portraits and other 'typical photog' people stuff to fill in the gaps while I make contacts and book appointments and events. Recently, I've been shooting more items for commercial advertising purposes as it pays alot better :)

Since motorsports is pretty much dead around here during the July and August months, I am forced to shoot the following....

My girlfriend and I recently picked up a pair of Hermit Crabs in Florida and we broght them back to Las Vegas with us. We named them
'Rum' and 'Punch'.

The following are of 'Punch', she is sporting the latest in fashion from Ann Taylor Loft. My girlfriend convinced a sales clerk to give up a pair of shells that they were using in a display.

The last two images are of 'Rum'.

Jacob:

You're friends headshot is a good shot... well done on your part. The pose, though puts me off. I can't imagine what his "look" would sell... the eyes are threatening and just too hard guy looking... not sure what agency would be attracted to showing this shot to a client.

The boxing girl is excellent all the way around.

The third shot I find the WELDING sign too prominent. I saw that first... her jeans and (nice) hips second and her face third. Not sure what this is telling me.

I don't have a feel for the last shot at all. It looks really posed... though that's their fault, not yours. While they're dressed goth, the image is a bit too colorful and happy. :)

That said, they are all shot very, very well.

Thank you, JT!

The welding shot was the first shoot I ever did with a reflector, and I didn't have an assistant. I shot this more than 2 years ago. it was only my second shoot ever with my d-slr.

The fourth one was my first shoot with my flash. I was playing with 2nd curtain synch as well as with the black light and the fluid. It was a fun shoot, and it gave me all kinds of ideas.

shoot n learn, right? ;)

i haven't shot a model for over a year, and i'm lining 2 shoots up this weekend to play with.

Jacob-
It looks like some sort of beauty lighting on a guy with a no hair and a pretty wide nose, interesting looking guy, but it looks llike it was shot in a restaurant or big hotel (bright lighting, blond wood and plants in the BG)

what does 'boxes for Perfect 10" mean?"

The welding sign adds to the shot IMO. Lighting is a bit harsh but it sort of fits the scene.

The last shot has way too much going on, take out one or two elements, back off a little by simplifiying a bit and it might work.

Jason- Those hermit crab shots are great! A huge print would be way cool, whoever thought crabs could be cute?

Mike - the headshot was shot in the courtyard at my house - http://www.ba-management.com/Argyle/Fountain.jpg

Both the welding shot and the 'glowing' shot were shots where I purposely composed shots that were "busy" to make my subjects stand out. I think it's a tricky way to shoot, but if you do it right, it looks good. Again, these were test shots, and I definately learned a lot from them :)

Cool stuff... I like the last image best... I'd like to see if you could hold a little more detail in the mountains. There are some great shadow patterns that would serve the image well if you could bring them out.

The first four appear as though you may have been a bit heavy handed with the vignette. I think it could be opened up and considerably less obvious.

All-in-all, nice stuff, though.

I was afraid of that (too heavy vignetting). Funny, when I have them printed, for some reason they do not look as dark as when they are online. I thought it would be just the opposite.

Anyone else have any thoughts? Critical C&C welcome.

Are you even allowed to own guns in Australia? I thought that wasn't allowed over there.

Not everyone has guns here, actually most folks I know don't have one. Alot of folks in Arizona have guns, and alot of folks in the south have guns (alot of shot guns and hunting rifles) But the ones who do have one, usually have more than just one.

I'll have my 2nd very shortly, as soon as the registration is complete :D An 1891/30 Russian Nagant

Hehehe, guns are cool. (in my best Beavis voice)

I own a few:

Sig Saur P220 .45ACP
Sig Saur P228 9mm
Sig Saur P229 .40 S&W
Browning .22 target pistol
Ruger Vaquero single action revolver in .45 long Colt (your standard cowboy gun)
Ruger custom 10/22 .22 target rifle
Benelli 12 guage semi-auto shotgun

Shooting is fun and a great way to relax. Its also a lot like photography in that no matter how good you get, you continue to strive to get better. Its also like shooting film in that it gets expensive buying ammo all the time, just like buying film. It will be great when I can get a digital model. :D

A lot of people do own guns here very responsibly. Getting rid of guns doesnt get rid of the crime, it just makes it easier for those willing to commit crimes to do it. The last drive by shooter I know didnt buy his gun legally.

Its also an interesting fact that the states that allow for carry permits to any citizen that doesnt have a criminal record, are also states that have less crime. The places that have the strictest gun laws are also the places with the most violent crime.

Anyway, that was a little OT, we should get back on topic.

I agree, it's a great way for a break from work. They actually do make scopes that have a digital chip in them, that take a pictures (possibly just as the trigger is pulled?), I believe. Is that digital enough for you? :D

The laws are very strict here but it's not hard to get a license for a single shot rifle for hunting, semi automatic and automaic rifles are totally illegal. It's not hard to get a hand gun license but only if you are a member of a gun club and for sport. That's what I've been thinking about doing.

You can't get a license to carry a handgun or anything like that. I've only ever seen hand guns on security gaurds, police, military etc.

Oh gosh you are all gonna hate me when my gun collection gets here from Louisiana. In the late 90's, early 2000's I owned a gun shop in Dallas. When it closed, I still had TONS of inventory. I have three VERY large gun safes full (428 I believe) of NIB firearms. I know I am the water boy when it comes to the photography team here, but lets have us an APN range day.:p

Daniel, I have that same gun (looks like a 336?) in colors and regularly hog hunt with essentially the same gun in .45-70 with a 520grn Garrett bullet over a VERY hot load. My largest hog to date is a 674lb monster that me and my Black Mouth Cur "Dallas" took down in Mississippi a few years back. Made the local paper with the hog strung up on the back of a tow truck.

So if any of you's guys need any gunsmithing or advice, I got lots o' that fer free.

By the way Daniel, um, nice shirt.

Daniel Buck
11-22-2006, 04:31 AM
yup, thats a 336, in 30-30 caliber though, thats plenty big enough for me :-)

I might need some help with my Nagant sometime! The wood is looking bad (That, I know what to do with), but I haven't shot it yet! Just been cleaning it up getting it ready. Taking it out this Friday, we'll see how it goes

http://www.danielbuck.net/wip/nagant_01.jpg

Tiny Malone
11-24-2006, 03:04 AM
Daniel, I can fix just about anything on this rifle in my sleep. The wood is easy to get (and cheap). The first thing I would do is true the action and rebarrel. Then a smidge of trigger work and you have a fun shooter. Be very careful with the extractor and firing pin. They seem to get a little flakey with age. Sorta like me. Maybe I need to get a myspace page too. And a photography for dummies/gimp book too. LOL :p

Daniel Buck
11-24-2006, 03:43 AM
The trigger seems nice, I like it's pressure and smoothness (have only run snap caps through it so far, tomorrow I'll run live ammo through it). The action, yes it does seems a bit rough (which I guess is somewhat to be expected from a war rifle over 60 years old!) The barrel looks pretty good, nice and bright with strong grooves. It was a little bit dull when I picked it up, but after flushing it with brake cleaner and using a wire brush with Hoppe's solvent it's looking real nice now.

I have a new stock on the way, well "new", I'm going to strip down, sand, and re-finish the 'new' stock, I'd rather not touch the original wood for now, it looks like it went through WW2 (haha! :D ) so I'm gonna keep it that way. What would you suggest for the bringing life back to the action? It's a little bit tough to actually cock the firing pin spring, but once that is cocked the action is pretty smooth. And also when actually chanbering a round, the last movement of the action as the bolt handle settles down into it's horizontal position, that last bit of movement requires a bit of effort sometimes as well. I think this is actually clipping the shell into the extracter piece? Not sure if that is normal. The entire bolt piece seems to rattle quite a bit. All of the Nagants I handled had this same trait, so I assume this is normal? After about 20 rounds I imagine my hand will be tired of recocking that spring.

Some from the land of less liberal gun laws ... well, at least until I move to Nottingham. I shoot what I see in my day-to-day life. Here's a few of my favourites, including one from my current phase of close-up and Macro stuff:

Probably my favourite photograph of all I've taken, taken to finish a film off on the way to the airport. It's a fellow student of mine, Holli, at Alexanderplatz Station during the A-Level (High School) German classes trip to Berlin:

No that's the incentive, rather "thoughts of living under a.." you have to maintain to ensure that you survive in this business..

No, I'm originally from Bath in the UK and the bridge in the background is Pultney Bridge, the only other bridge with shops on it is the Ponte Vecchio in Florence (I'll find an image I took earlier this year) from which the inspiration came to build the Pultney Bridge.

There, that's your little bit of architectural history for today...

For our American audience, the game is University Challenge with Jeremy Paxman. Both Googled ahead by appointment. Link (http://www.blanchflower.org/uc/img/paxman.jpg)

Having correctly answered the starter for ten, your picture bonuses are three more photographs from Bath. Five points for each location you can identify.

One - The name of the street if possible, broad area if not:

Two - The name of the park:

Three - Same location as Two but, I needed three pictures to complete the Picture round and to my regret, I haven't shot up Bath properly yet ... we need more liberal gun laws:
