Welcome:

The Automotive Photographers Network was created as resource to promote this unique segment of photography and photographic arts. It is a community of professionals sharing knowledge, resources and the pursuit of excellence.

While membership to the community is open to all, the Automotive Photographers Network Directory of Professionals is a fee based membership requiring Sponsorship from an existing APN Directory Member. Regardless of the level you join, we hope you'll abide by our request that your register using your proper name. This is a great place to meet people, expand your knowledge and get your name out there.

Discussions will cover the all aspects of automotive photography. Whether you're shooting shows, static beauty shots, commercial work, motorsports, track-days or just for fun, we want to hear all about it.

We hope you'll make APN a bookmark in your browser and visit often. More importantly, we hope you'll participate. We encourage you to ask questions, interact with other memebers and, most of all, share your pictures.

Feel free to use this thread to introduce yourself.

Hello, my name is Jim Sykes and I'm an autophotoaholic. I shoot the ALMS and Speed World Challenge on a regular basis and hit up as many Grand Am events as possible as well. Motorsports is my specialty, but also shoot other forms of sports as well.

Here is a sample shot (also testing the upload feature).

Hello everyone, I'm Todd Corzett. I'm a photographer specializing in motorsports. I primarily cover events within California, but that allows me to cover many forms of racing.

I'm looking forward to participating!

Edit - You may want to post the "registering with your proper name" somewhere in the agreement... oh yeah, and could someone delete the "TCorzett" user

It is great to see everyone back in one spot again. I am looking forward to a long relationship here.

I started shooting motorsports in 1989 but took a break from film for awhile and got back into the business a few years ago and I am now shooting 100% digital and loving it. I shoot motorsports primarily but cover other sports as well.

I hope I can contribute in some little way to the community.

Keep the rubber side down.

Hello I'm Tim Adams. I'm sure most of you have seen me post in various forums. I'm just a rank amateur photographer who enjoys all motorsports, but I have to admit I find myself thinking about the Reno Air Races at almost every waking moment.:D

Sorry about the wide image. I will just post a link to it on my site. I have to admit my site is not user friendly to people still in the dark ages at 800x600 screen resolutions. I don't think I have a single shot on my site that is 700 pixels or under.:(

I will not be able to attend, I will be shooting the NHRA Sport Compact Nationals and D1 Drift. Make sure to post some shots and few self portraits ... that's what we need here, a "Fun Pix" section, but we can't call it "Fun Pix" can we because of that other sports site. :D

Dennis Murray
07-07-2006, 10:42 PM
John, thanks for putting together the site (and thanks to Zerin for his contributions as well). Looking forward to seeing work in a lot of different areas again.

I'm Dennis Murray, currently of Cumming, GA (30 miles north of Atlanta, 45 minutes southwest of Road Atlanta by backroads). I've primarily been shooting SCCA and NASA evens at Road Atlanta. My photos have been published in SportsCar (The official magazine of the SCCA) as well as the NASA News Section of Grassroots Motorsports. I also contribute to Planetlemans.com, in both news reporting and photography.

My background...I'm 29, married with now two sons, and a native of the Washington, DC area. I moved to Atlanta to go to Georgia Tech and graduated 7 years ago with a Industrial Engineering degree. I'm part time in photography but it is what I"m passionate about.

It's been since March since I was trackside...a combination of the birth of my second son and the local schedule has kept me away from the track. I have opened some new areas this year with shooting team sports.

Yessssssssss! Another kickass photo site. I too was addicted to ap.com. Drew's site popped up and now this, i'm in Auto Photo Heaven.

My name's Austin. I'm a full time student at the Art Institute of California–Orange County where I'm studying Graphic Design. My passion, however, lies within Automotive Photography. I've been shooting as an amateur posing aspiring to be pro for about 3 years. I attribute my involvement with Pete Lyons and the class I took from his wife during High School in Big Bear. He guided me towards the Canon Light and I've never turned back. I shoot on a Canon 10D and rent lenses from Sammys regularly. Here's a few samples of mine that have been recycled many times over. Many of you have seen them, some haven't.

Hello everyone! It's nice to have another auto-centric photo forum, ever since Automotivephoto.com shut down I've been desparately seeking a place where pros discussed auto photography. I've become a bit weary of wading through shedloads of camera phone pictures of the latest econobox. This is certainly a nice change of pace!

So, thanks to all the admins and everyone that worked on getting the site up. It seems most of you shoot motorsports, while I'm shooting primarily static and beauty, but here's my two favorites from the Limerock ALMS GP a couple weeks ago:

Hi everyone,

Well Im not your average automotive photographer I suppose. I'm a spy.

I work with Brenda Priddy blowing the lids off cars that have yet to hit the dealerships. We bring you photos of cars that are sometimes over a year away from production. Some of you may have recently seen the red 2007 Silverado Z71 I was lucky enough to snag 4 months before the scheduled debut. http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=115770
Before that we'd only seen the upcoming GM pickups totally covered in black vinyl.

My hit list of 155 prototypes captured includes the Corvette Z06, Hummer H3, numerous Mercedes AMG products, Porsche 911 turbo, Solstice GXP, Honda Civic Si and the Dodge Caliber SRT.

All that said, I dont shoot just prototypes.

Hi!

I'm Lukas Siewior. I live in New Jersey and I'm a good friend with Jason Thorgalsen (it's his fault I'm here). Photography is more of my hobby, where videography is my top priority. I've been shooting for couple years - started with Minolta 5000I (still have it - time to let it go), then Minolta A1 and recently upgraded to Minolta 5D. As you can see I'm Minolta guy - can't tell why.

Look forward to contributing how/when I can and looking to learn some more from our members!

Welcome to the boards, Jeff. Love that last shot of the Porsche. We just shot Infineon during the NASCAR weekend.... the campers and praking lots sure spoiled the back drop for this shot. It's got such a cool look as a "going away" shot.

it looks like Jim Sykes has brought in quite a few people from the Vortex :)

I'm rather new to shooting cars, let alone anything else. I tend to shoot car shows, gatherings, and cruises. Most of the stuff that I have that resembles a 'real' car shoot is just me finding a good way to take photos at shows or gatherings. I haven't had the chance to shoot any motorsports yet, though I've got a set of tickets for Portland's ALMS this month so I'll be practicing there.

I currently have a D70, the 18-70, Nikon's 70-210, and a 20mm 2.8 for a few indoor car shows. I don't have any flashes yet :(

long live AP.net!!! =)

I shoot mostly feature cars as opposed to motorsports, although I do cover some stuff here and there.
I do work for mostly tuner type magazines (Import Tuner, Superstreet, Euro Car, etc) but I'm moving into more commercial related work.
My portfolio is listed in my sig as well as my online e-zine

Hi people.

I shoot cars, have shot for two handfuls of magazines over the past few years. Started off as an intern at Primedia in '02-'03 in the marketing department, got a chance to shoot some event stuff back then, and have been doing freelance ever since.

I started my own online e-zine known as EverythingDrift.com, been focusing on unique editorial content for Drifting, which not many companies are doing right now. It's opened a lot of doors for me.

I've also met a few of you people off of here (and AP.com when it was around). Even recruited a few of you ;)

I'm glad this place is back!

Scott Dukes

Scott Dukes here.

I shoot cars primarily, been doing so for about the past 8 months or so. Just about all imports at this rate. More feature cars than track events for the most part. I shoot regularly for JTuned.com along with Steve Demmitt, and have done some mag work here and there, hopefully with more to come.

More stuff can be found on my portfolio site or around JTuned.com

Keith here...go by "Beef" on some boards. I shoot primarily drifting but do some statics, road racing, and whatever else on wheels too. I do some freelancing here and there but enjoy not having photography be my 9-5. I also thoroughly enjoy virtually all other forms of photography, especially macro work.

Site looks great - and *gasp* makes sense!

Hello all,

My name is Jessica...I'm 20 and I am going to school in Santa Barbara, CA (for automotive photography.) I was also a member of AP...and I am extremely happy to be a new member of APN. It looks as though there are a lot of the same people here, which makes me really happy. I look forward to hearing from everyone again, and I look forward to contributing much more as well.:D

I have been obsessed with cars since I was a little girl...and in March I got the chance to take THE ONLY automotive class my photography school provides. As if that wasn't exciting enough for me...turns out the man that normally teaches the class was out for surgery...so guess who taught the class?? The chief photographer of Motor Trend Magazine!! It was the best 2 months of my life.

Here are a few from that class( i know they still need a few tweaks...*reflections* but I'm excited to continue my learning experience)

Hello,
My name is William Walker, I am 21 and I go to school in Santa Barbara, ca at Brooks Institute of Photography. I have always loved cars and photography and so it is my goal to become the best autoshooter I can. I recently as like Jessica, took the only auto class offered at Brooks, and was taught by the photographer from motortrend. I shoot as much as I can ( when I am not loaded down by other types of photography) I love shooting cars and everything that it involves (mostly the driving :))

These are some of the shots I took during the class

This is Jessica driving, she is at the end of a 50 yard drift at about 40mph on the dry lake, man that was fun...you would think the power-steering pumps on chargers would be more rugged....ohh well god bless rental's

I'm Erik Anderson, based in KC, MO. After longing for AP.com to come back on, I registered at POTN where I found this site linked in John Thawley's sig file. I'm glad to see an automotive focused website back online.

I shoot regional drag racing, autocrossing, club track rentals, and car shows as my mainstay while doing small commerical bits here and there. Here's a few that I shot this weekend:

I primarily shoot within the MINI community and recently got my first magazine cover.

Thank-you John for picking up the ball on this one, I still get so angry with the way things down at the old AP. What a debacle!

However, there are a few of you (who shall remain nameless) who should have told me about the party!

Congrats on the new *cough* better, site. I can't wait to see what you all have been up to!!

I stumbled across a mention of this site over at Fred Miranda and glad I did.

With the ages listed in the posts I guess I'm a "father figure" at age 48! I'm a full time pharmacist and part time photographer shooting mostly road racing (NASA Florida, Karting, and drag racing (at Moroso Motorsports Park). I'm hoping to learn from the members here.

I have not run into any of you pro guys here in South Florida yet. Any ideas how to get the APN Pro recommendation for membership?

Hi guys!(I haven't noticed any ladies, yet),
Just a quick word of introduction. I began shooting motorsports in 2006, and was pleased to have some images and a story published last year in 3 vintage mags and "Grassroots Motorsports". I major on vintage mostly because that's what I've been able to get published regularly. I will be shooting whatever else moves fast to see what other facets of this exciting market I can capitalize on. A few samples...

You'll need to quit that pharmacy job and take up photography full time :)

Pro Membership is reserved for working professionals within the industry. Each Pro member will receive a personal profile page, image uploading and a personal APN Gallery. Membership is $45 per year and requires sponsorship from an existing APN Pro Member

Everyone has to start somewhere.... if a shooter is turning out good work and conducting business in a professional manner, we want to bring them into the fold and get them on the right track. We'll let the free market do its job from there. ;)

Hello everyone and thank you for allowing me to join. I'm just an amature photog (mechanical engineer by day) from PA although I have provided some local teams with photos this past year. I shoot nothing but racing (I probably should venture out of my comfort zone) 90% of which is at local dirt tracks. I'd love to get to more sportscar events but geography and finances limit my travels. I do make it a point to hit up one ALMS race a year however. Pardon me but I think it is time to "dirty" up this tread with some cars that play in the dirt.

Hello everyone,

I am a professional Photographer / Designer from Zagreb, Croatia...

looking at my portfolio one could say I specialize in automotive work, but that is just because my main client is an automotive one.. :) and I am a complete gearhead...
My background is in large format photography, studio and arhitecture work, as well as desing and image manipulation. I shoot on medium and large format, have some custom made 6x12 cm cameras for automotive rig work, but I have recently switched to digital as I started working for the croatian edition of english EVO magazine.
please visit my portfolio on photobucket (no time to do a personal webpage unfortunately..), there are some shots of my rigs also..

Man I want to shoot a WOO race... and those modifieds in the last shot... you need to rethink that last shot... that's a great location. I'd get in there with something wider... get more of the rail in the frame.... maybe across the bottom and pick up the drift of the cars and massive sweep of the corner. Maybe even black and white.

I really want to shoot that stuff.

Thanks,

John

Never been to Zagreb but went to Dubrovnik a summer ago and loved it. Everyone was so friendly and the area was so beautiful. You must have some good backdrops to shoot.
I looked at your portfolio... great colors, very vivid and exciting.

Thanks, I am glad you like Dubrovnik... :)

as for the backdrops.. I miss some more "clean" surroundings, like large open spaces, deserts etc. that you have in the US.. also, what we miss is more modern architecture, I mean, we have lots of new buildings, but they are not avnatgarde enough for my taste.. :)

also, I do not know how you folks deal with site permissions, but it is getting very difficult to do any location shooting over here due to the problems with site permits...

cheers

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to take a few mins and introduce myself. I am a newbie photographer who happens to be a motorsports fan. I have been shooting select events for the past two years and started getting more serious this year. I am planning on trying to make a business out of it because there seems to definitely be a market in motorsports and because I enjoy shooting it. I realize this is a professional site so I hope to move more into that realm in the near future. Unfortunately I don't have a ton of time to spend since I am part of another business venture (Startup Software company) but this is a lot more fun....Hopefully as my other business takes off it will yield more time to spend in this venture!

So far I've just been shooting 'behind the fence' however this April at VIR400 I won my first job for one of the GrandAm DP teams and I'm looking forward to it. Any tips you could provide would be very appreciated...I hope to do alot of reading and practice over the next few weeks in preparation. I've attached a few shots from Petite Lemans as well as the VIR400 both from last year. I hope to improve on my panning (as I realize some of these shots don't have enough motion) and be aided with better angles to work with since I"ll be inside the fence.

I plan on posting a few questions in the business section so if you have a few moments please take a look there.

I hope to meet some of you as I become more involved in the motorsports events and build my portfolio.

Also I've attached a link to my personal gallery which has a motorsports section...I am in the process of designing a more professional site for my business and I hope to have this up before the end of the month.

Thanks for your time,

Justin Boeckler

Wow. So THIS is where everyone went.

Hahah I've been checking the AP site up until a little while ago when it finally went down for good, I had no idea there was another site already set up!

Anyway, some of you guys might remember me from the AP site as "TheSquidd". Most of you probably don't.

Anyway, what I've been up to since then... I shoot motor sports events for an automotive parts manufacturer, I'll let you guess which one... unfortunately they haven't sent me anywhere for awhile.

Um as for what I am into... obviously you can tell I like the "import culture" so that's one strike against me... oh and I like drifting... so yeah I can tell you guys are going to looooooooooove me.

Anyway. Yeah. I drive this hunk of #$6#. I drift, I time trial.

I also shoot some video, more drifting so I'll spare you that.

Um.. yeah so I look forward to posting up some stuff.

It's nice to have a place to discuss and learn from others in the automotive photography field.. :)

Hi. I'm based in the SF Bay area and have been shooting race cars since about 1983. I actually got interested in serious photography through Indy car racing during the CART era. Since then I've broadened my motorsports interests quite a bit. My current love is sprint car racing, preferably without wings. But I've also shot the Monterey Historics on a press pass as a newsletter editor for my car club. And I occasionally find myself spectating at Sears Point (I can't bring myself to call it that other name) and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Here's a couple sprint car shots to give you a taste of what I do:

I guess I introduced myself in the wrong spot. Oops. (See: Hello from Madison, WI!)

Well I guess I'll go into more detail. I shoot mostly static cars and motorcycles. I would love to get into motorsports. I've been inspired by your guys so I'm going to see if Road America has anything left in the season. I ride a 2001 Suzuki SV650S motorcycle, I own a modified 1994 Honda Civic del sol and a winter beater 1993 Chevy Blazer. Yes I love imports, domestics everything.

I work with a local tv show here in Madison called Street Club TV (streetclubtv.com) and a number of car clubs and I am hoping to expand my presence around the state. We have a number of large shows in Wisconsin and of corse Road America and a number of other tracks.

Hello, all. I had the good luck to sit next to John Thawley in the Media Center at Laguna Seca last weekend, and registered for this forum then and there. I'm glad to be among such great photographers and I look forward to learning from you all.

I live in Oakland, CA, and currently shoot child portraits and motor sports. Basically, I like fast moving subjects.

I was a graphic designer for about fifteen years, before my wife's job in software offered us the chance to move to France, where we stayed for two years. That pretty much killed my design business and made me a stay home dad.

Now, in addition to portraits, I do mainly motorcycle racing for a MotoGP website based in Amsterdam, but I shoot cars, too. ALMS is one of my favorite events because of the opportunity to shoot as the sun sets, which it rarely does on motorcycle races.

Here are a few of my latest photos.
