For any of you who shoot editorially for any Primedia-owned magazine, what do they expect in terms of usage for what they pay?

I did a thing for Hot Rod recently and they asked me to sign a contract giving them exclusive use for quite a short period, about 4 months or so. Being in Australia I'm not a regular contributor though.
Ask the relevant Ed as they may have different requirements at different Primedia mags.

I cannot remember anything specific, it varied depending on the particular job and magazine - they have so many different ones. In general, it felt rather typical - smaller payments for non-exclusive articles, a bit more for exclusive within their market for a set time period.

They demand exclusivity on all shoots, from what I remember. I've been able to negotiate exceptions, but it's entirely up to the editor.
Out of curiosity, which magazine is it?

Primedia does do some content syndication with other titles world-wide. They like to have the freedom to do that, though they rarely do.
Most magazines at PM are currently so under staffed it is rediculous. They will usually never get around to sending you a contract. And when they do, they will run the photos whether you resurn it (signed) or not. The lawyers are behind the rights issues and contracts. They leave it up to the editors to enforce. Most editors either don't give a damn or never have the time to deal with it.

Ah... not sure if MLE is under the Primedia umbrella yet or not. They're still very well staffed, and they had very different rules than other magazines.

They are under the umbrella, I asked an editor there last week who has been asking me to get some images from Japan.

So now that modified is under primedia does that mean advertising rates will go up, print quality with go down, and we can expect more pages of ads than articles?

Yes, the Modified family of publications is currently under the Primedia "umbrella" or "cloud," whichever way you wanna look at it :) They seem to be up and running again...
Generally, Primeda wants exclusivity for four months after publication, and non-exclusive rights afterwards. They also want rights to license the images to third parties (which I don't like). In the past, I've "struck through" that term...I have yet to run into any issues. But, I've only had a few things published so far, so your mileage may vary!
Those with whom I've dealt at Modified have been cordial and professional. Let me know if you have any more thoughts or concerns...I'd be curious to learn about your experience...

I was too expensive when one of their two wheeled magazines wanted to use me.
I like it that way...
