Went there today by myself real quick (only stayed about 15 minutes) to check the area out. It's great, man what a cool place! Will be back tomorrow with a few folks from work for a longer stay, and video cameras :-D
I did open it up once to 140mph then I popped it in neutral and coasted. I was surprised at how quickly it got to 140 (thanks to the blower no doubt!), it still had steam left and I have 4.10 gears! I'm pretty sure it will hit 150 (the limit of my speedo), but I may be out of gear for any higher than that. Maybe it's time I go back to 3.55 gears! I was so caught up in everything I didn't glance at what my RPM was at 140, but from the sound I know I had RPM left, and still pushing good.

Daniel:
If you've got the Elmo itch, do check out one of the SCTA's meets out there. I promise you will not be bored. Some of the oddest and coolest gear-head creationbs I have ever seen show up there. Some of the oddest gear-heads, too. First event is May 5-6th.

Thanks for the link :) I have had the itch to shoot (and drive!) hotrods on the flats ever since I was in Jr High and Highschool. I worked in a hotrod/classic restoration shop, I remember my boss and his friends talking about racing flat out on 'the salt'.
I know I won't be able to build my own rod for a while (need to have a house with a garage to do that, I'm live in apartments for now), but I would LOVE to find someone who has an old rod that wouldn't mind taking it out to the flats someday for some photos. I was so thrilled just to BE on the lake bed, it was like a dream come true. Well, part of the dream anyway. I have always wanted to go, and had no idea that now I'm in LA there is one only 2 hours away :D I suspect my car will be getting dirty quite often now :D

Here is the full set! Including new photos from today!! A friend (Derek Smith) took the photographs of me driving. I must say, after shooting out there today, action shots with the 400mm, I have a new respect for sports shooters! It's difficult, and my keeper rate was way below what I am used to!
Man this place is beautiful, I wish I could live out there!
Here are a few from today, visiti the link for the rest of them: http://404photography.net/elmirage/

Just out of interest, do you shoot with a full frame camera? I'm looking to get either the EF 28mm f1.4 or the EF 35mm f1.4 for my 5D, its nice to see how wide the 28mm shots you have taken relate to automotive subjects.

Fantastic shots. Is it just a free-for-all out there? I assume you're watching for roostertails coming your way while you're out there. :)

Shaun, yes I shoot with a full frame. I love the 28mm (that's a Zeiss 28mm 2.8 Distagon), probably my favorite lens!
Brian, yea we were constantly keeping watch for other folks, we had walky-talkies and making sure the area was clear before we made a pass. It was mostly quads and dirt bikes though, which are slow.

I WANT TO PLAY IN THE DIRT!
Looks like fun! I really like the dust picture (#11). What happened with #21? Did that come off of a car?

Nah, in 21 that's a tire marking a post sticking out of the ground. Apparently someone at one time tried to put up some sort of structure or something, and that post was left sticking out. It makes a good marker though, you can get your baring pretty good when you are within range to see the tire.

i like 19 a lot good job, i don't really like the new car, black and white oldy combo would be better with and older stang.

I'm slower with the color images (black and white is easy, it's just contrast! hehe!) Here are some color shots of my mustang. 1 and 3 were saturday, 2 and 4 were sunday.
The color seems to be different in each image, and the only reason I can figure is because of the differences in lenses (28 and 200 were Zeiss, 85 and 400 were canon) I did the same processing on each image, so I guess it's just the differences in lense coatings and glass that accounts for the color differences. I'll try and nail the colors better next time I have time.
